What the work looks like on a normal week
Less glamorous than the title sounds. Most of the week goes on conversations with people who want different things from the same product. Sales asks for more volume. The people who build the thing usually ask for fewer features, because every feature is something they have to keep alive for years after.
The business designer sits in the middle of that and writes it down. Not as a long document nobody opens, but as a single page or a rough model where the trade-off is visible: if we promise this, we pay for it here. Once the cost is on paper, the argument gets much shorter.
Then you test it with a small version, not a full build.
Skills that matter more than the software you use
Tools change every couple of years and it does not matter much which board or template you draw on. What people keep asking for is more basic:
- Reading a simple set of numbers without being scared of them, and asking where they came from.
- Talking to real customers and writing down what they said, not what you hoped they said.
- Making a rough prototype fast enough that people argue about the thing, not about the idea of the thing.
- Explaining a model to someone from finance and to someone from support, in the same meeting.
The last one is harder than it looks. A model that only makes sense to the person who drew it is not finished yet.
Getting into it when nobody handed you the title
Plenty of people do this work under another name. Product manager, service designer, strategist, or the founder who is doing everything anyway. If your company is small, the honest way in is to pick one thing that is not working — a pricing option, an onboarding step, a service that costs more to run than it brings back — and treat it as a design problem instead of a complaint.
Map how the money moves through it. Ask two or three customers why they chose it, then ask two who left. Draw the current model and a possible one next to each other, and be specific about what would have to be true for the second one to work. That comparison is usually the moment the room goes quiet.
You may find the answer is smaller than expected. Often it is one step in the process that everybody knew was broken and nobody owned. Fix that, write down what changed, and do the next one.
